On October 5, I posted an interview with the star of The Room, Greg Sestero. At the end of the interview, Sestero mentioned that he was working on a tell-all book about his experience on the film. Since that time, Sestero has sent me multiple versions of his proposal for his book and I’ve helped him work on editing it before submitting it to his publisher.
AND NOW
According to Publisher’s Weekly:
Fans of the film Entertainment Weekly dubbed “the Citizen Kane of bad movies,” The Room, will now get a behind-the-scenes look at this cult turkey. Greg Sestero, who co-starred in the film, and Tom Bissell, who wrote about the film for Harper’s, sold Locked Inside “The Room” to Trish Todd and Molly Lindley at Simon & Schuster. Jim Rutman at Sterling Lord brokered the North American rights deal. The book, S&S said, will delve into the various mysteries behind the making of the film, especially the enigmatic director at the center of the project, Tommy Wiseau. Sestero added that the story behind The Room is one of “sadness and ultimate artistic heroism” that is “just as surreal, baffling, and entertaining as the film itself.” The book is scheduled for January 2013.
Having read through the proposal a few times, I can honestly say that this is going to be one helluva book. The Room is an insane, incomprehensible, but lovable mess and this book promises to tell all of the stories you’ve always wanted to know. The proposal alone answered some questions I had and just whet my appetite for what is to come because it sounds as daft and bizarre as you would imagine.
I wish I could share some of the stories that will be in the book, but I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to say, so I won’t say anything except that I can guarantee that this will be a book worth buying whether you know the film or not. It is going to be a book that is so much more than a behind the scenes of the most disasterous movie since Ed Wood retired – it’s a story of one enigmatic man’s struggle to make a mark in Hollywood and just how strange the journey can be.
